The gems of Western Norway
Sun, fjords, and experiences in Hardanger and Sunnhordland
Recently, Reiseteam traveled to Hardanger and Sunnhordland – and it’s no exaggeration to call this the very best of Western Norway. The nature, the people, and the experiences here are truly something special. This is a region with charm all year round, whether you come to see snow-covered mountain peaks, fresh spring colors, or the golden hues of autumn. But this time, Western Norway was shining a little extra – with brilliant sunshine and temperatures well above 30°C. A rare, but unforgettable combination!
Bondhusvatnet – a hike for most people
One of the highlights was the beautiful hike to Bondhusvatnet. The well-maintained trail makes it accessible for most people, and you’re rewarded with spectacular views of the turquoise lake and the glacier arm at the end. The walk takes about one hour round trip at a brisk pace – and is just as suitable for families with children as for enthusiastic hikers.

Buarbreen and glacier hiking
If you’re looking for a more active experience, Buarbreen just outside Odda is a must. Here, you can join guided glacier hikes – a raw natural experience that truly leaves a mark. With ice axes, crampons, and experienced guides, you’ll get up close to the forces of nature and learn more about how the glacier has shaped the landscape over thousands of years.
Whether you’re tired after the hike or simply want to enjoy a great meal in spectacular surroundings, Buer Restaurant offers an experience you won’t soon forget. With local ingredients and an atmosphere that reflects the wild, beautiful nature outside, this is a place that truly stands out.
I’m planning a visit here this winter – and I’m really looking forward to it! Imagine sitting indoors with panoramic views of snow-covered mountains while enjoying warm flavors and a cozy atmosphere. This is not just a meal – it’s part of the entire experience of being in the heart of Norway’s most powerful nature.
Food, drinks, and atmosphere by the fjord
After a long day outdoors, there’s little that beats a good dinner by the water. Ola K in Nå offers both lunch and dinner of high quality at a reasonable price. Here you’ll find great dishes with a local twist – their famous cider sauce is pure magic. With a wide selection of non-alcoholic cider on the menu, it’s easy to find something for every taste. The service is impeccable, and the location – right by the fjord – is simply unique.
In the area, you’ll also find several local cider producers, offering great opportunities for tastings and farm visits. This is local culture at its very best!

Lothepus and his new project
Another exciting feature in the region is Lothepus’ latest project – the construction of a modern stave church and a new campsite. This has quickly become a success. Here, you can enjoy a good meal in the longhouse, and if you’re lucky, Lothepus himself might show up.

Hardanger and Sunnhordland
The area is much more than just beautiful nature. It’s a complete experience – with history, food, activities, and authentic Western Norwegian soul. Whether you come for a weekend or a longer holiday, it’s easy to understand why so many people fall in love with this region.
Often, it’s the small things…
A little Hardanger tip from me to you 🍎
If you ever find yourself in beautiful Hardanger – which I truly hope you do – don’t miss out on some of the best the area has to offer.
My little secret for a great meal is the non-alcoholic cider Blaane. It simply tastes fantastic – fresh, fruity, and perfectly elegant. I’ve served it to friends, family, and even some picky guests, and it has been a hit every single time. Bonus: it pairs well with a wide variety of dishes, so you don’t have to worry about what to match it with.
So next time you’re in Hardanger, bring home a couple of bottles of Blaane directly from the farm – it’s like taking a little taste of Western Norway with you 🍏😄
Kind regards,
Silje Helen Brekke
